Caregiving in Bedford, TX - Seniors Helping Seniors Provides Home ...

One of the most rewarding things about family caregiving is being able to spend quality time with the senior for whom you provide care. Simple crafts are a great way to engage homebound seniors and help them stave off the boredom around the holidays. Family caregiving is especially satisfying during the holiday season because family members from out of town can be present to engage homebound seniors.

Decorative Glycerin Soaps

Materials:

? Clear glycerin soap base

? Clean juice or milk carton

? Knife

? Spoon

? Glass measuring cup

? Food coloring

? Scent oils of your choice

Glycerin soap is extremely easy to make and makes a great holiday gift. Cut the glycerin base into small cubes, place in a measuring cup and microwave at 15-second intervals. Once your base is melted, add a few drops of food coloring and your scent oils. After your food coloring and scent oils are stirred in completely, pour the soap in the milk carton mold. Let set for a few hours and then slice into bars.

Bleach Pen Shirts

Materials:

? Tee shirt or sweatshirt in a dark color

? Bleach pen

? Pieces of cardboard

? Stencils

? Tape

? Washing machine

Using a bleach pen on a shirt can have fantastic results with very little effort. Choose a stencil and tape it onto the shirt where you would like your design. Place a piece of cardboard inside your shirt between the front and the back pieces of fabric to prevent the bleach from bleeding through. Use the bleach pen to fill in the stencil area. Wait about 20 minutes. Once you see the color of your fabric start to change, wash your shirt in the washing machine. This method can also be used on tote bags, pants or anything else made out of a thin cotton material.

Pine Cone Centerpieces

Materials:

? Pine cones in a variety of sizes

? Assortment of beads, yarn, ribbon, construction paper, etc.

? Glitter

? Glue

? Scissors

Cover a pine cone with plain white glue, and then sprinkle the glitter of your choice all over the glue. Put out an assortment of decorations so your family can create ?ornaments? and trim their miniature Christmas tree. Glue each decoration in place and let dry for several hours. Group your family?s finished products in a large bowl with a flat bottom and use them as a festive centerpiece for your dining room table.
