West Bengal government to acquire land for Burdwan housing project

LandKolkata- After coming to power, the Trinamool Congress government is planning for the biggest land acquisition drive. The same party has earlier opposed the land acquisition by the Left Front government when it was in power.

In December 2010, the Left Front government had planned to get about 3,600 acres of land at Gourandi and Banjemari mouzas of Burdwan district in order to develop a housing project for the people evicted by Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL). And now since its mining projects have again got approval from Commerce and Industries Department, the project proposal will also be re-validated by the state cabinet.

During that time, the Left Front government failed to execute the project because of opposition by landowners. And then the project was put on hold as the 2011 assembly elections were coming up and also there were some land issues.

After conducting a survey, the Trinamool government decided to revive the project to provide rehabilitation to 40,000 families, which were displaced by ECL?s mining activities in Burdwan district.

Asansol Durgapur Development Authority (ADDA) will be executing a residential project and the cost for the project is estimated to be Rs 2,650 crore. The state government will acquire the land through ADDA and the funds for the project will be given by the ECL.

The land will be acquired to serve public purpose and not for setting up any private industry. It will be developed as an aid to poor people. No policies of the present government will be compromised, said government officials.

There were about 32,000 families whose land is being taken for the housing project of which 50 percent are illegally acquired government lands, said ADDA. However the government has planned to provide compensation according to the provisions of Land Acquisition Act of 1884, to ?genuine? landowners while it is preparing a different compensation package for the squatters.
