Kansas City Chiefs' Belcher in fatal double shooting

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Reuters) - Kansas City Chiefs starting linebacker Jovan Belcher shot his girlfriend to death, then drove to the team training facility and killed himself in front of the coach and general manager in a burst of violence on Saturday that stunned the NFL and its fans.

There was no immediate indication from police or others what prompted the 25-year-old Belcher to shoot Kasandra Perkins, 22 with whom he had a 3-month-old child, in the house they shared in Kansas City about 2 miles from the Chiefs' home field at Arrowhead Stadium.

Police spokesman Darin Snapp said Perkins' mother witnessed the killing and called police. Perkins had suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at a hospital.

The mother told investigators that Perkins and Belcher had quarreled just before the shooting but that Belcher had never before been physically abusive with her daughter, Snapp added.

Belcher then drove his car to the team's training facility near the stadium, where he encountered head coach Romeo Crennel and general manager Scott Pioli, then shot himself in the head just as police arrived.

"As officers pulled up and were getting ready to get out of their car, they heard a gunshot," Snapp said. "The individual, it appears, took his own life."

Snapp said Belcher had made no threats to Crennel, Pioli or other employees when he arrived. "He was just talking to them and thanking them for everything they had done for him," the police spokesman said.

The suicide of Belcher followed a recent string of former National Football League players who have taken their own lives, including Junior Seau in May, Ray Easterling in April and Dave Duerson last year.

Those deaths heightened growing concerns about the risk of brain injury from repeated concussions suffered by veteran NFL players in a game that some critics say has grown too aggressive and brutal.

At a news conference later in the day, Kansas City Mayor Sly James decried the violence as "part of the tragedy of urban living in this country."

"Handguns all over the place, people blowing themselves away, and others. At some point, we have to get a handle on this kind of stuff. We are not doing a good job of it," he said.

'GREAT GREAT GREAT TEAM MATE'

He also expressed bewilderment at what drove Belcher to such violent behavior.

"A young man in a high-profile position, for whatever reason, felt the end of the world had come, and he had to act in the way he did," James said. "What kind of burden was he under to do that?"

Although news of the murder-suicide stunned the tight-knit NFL community, the Chiefs announced later their game against the Carolina Panthers at Arrowhead would be played on Sunday as scheduled.

The Chiefs have won just one of 11 games this season, the worst record in the NFL.

In a message on the social media network Twitter, Chiefs' tight end Tony Moeaki wrote: "Devastated. One of everyone's favorite team mates including one of mine. Great great great team mate. We will miss him forever."

Belcher was signed by the team in 2009 after he was overlooked in the NFL draft and established himself as a regular starter in his second season. Earlier this year, he signed a one-year deal worth just under $2 million. This season, Belcher started 10 of 11 games, making 38 tackles.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the Chiefs and the families and friends of those who lost their lives in this terrible tragedy," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said, adding that professional counselors were being made available to team members and their families.

The Chiefs' chairman, Clark Hunt, issued a statement offering sympathy and condolences to "the families and friends affected by this unthinkable tragedy."

"We will continue to fully cooperate with the authorities and work to ensure that the appropriate counseling resources are available to all members of the organization," he wrote.

Condolences from others throughout the NFL sprang up on Twitter, where NFL Players Association assistant executive George Atallah wrote, "There is nothing profound or comforting to say that can help us understand or explain a situation like this."

Defensive end Justin Tuck, a two-time Super Bowl winner with the New York Giants, tweeted, "Man prayers go out to the KC Chiefs community and families after this mornings tragic incident."

Guide your teams to attain goals: 3 ways ? Business Management ...

Savvy leaders induce compliance rather than demand it. They guide people to think for themselves and draw their own conclusions.

To lead others in the right direction, articulate a clear goal and set a time?table for attaining it. Let the conversation unfold in three phases:

1. Discuss a deadline. After establishing the goal, say, ?Let?s explore when you need to achieve it.? Solicit the employee?s thoughts on the time frame and, if necessary, cite your own preferences.

For example, a supervisor may tell you he thinks training staff on new purchasing software will take one month. You might reply, ?Sounds good. But if everyone was up to speed in two weeks, we?d reap more savings sooner and that would increase your team?s year-end bonus.?

2. Define the stakes. Explore why your employee thinks the goal matters. That?s better than giving a lecture. Ask, ?Why do you think this is important??

When employees say, ?This is a big project for us and here?s why,? you lead by letting others see the meaning and organizational impact of their effort. This breeds commitment and a shared spirit of success.

3. Postulate ?what ifs.? Make sure employees understand the positive consequences of goal attainment?and the negative consequences if they fail. Pose hypothetical queries such as, ?What if you miss the deadline??, ?What if you get derailed by unexpectedly high costs??, ?What if worst-case outcomes get in the way??

By walking people through ?what if? scenarios, you help them anticipate un??knowns and prepare contingency plans. And you underscore the seriousness of the goal and implicitly signal how much it means to you that the employee plow ahead despite any obstacles that arise.

Ally's gift picks: 2012 holiday guide

Ally's gift picks: 2012 holiday guide

This season we're asking everyone here at iMore to share some of their favorite gift ideas. Sure, there'll be iPhone, iPad, and Mac apps and accessories included on everyones' lists, just as you'd expect, but there'll also be other stuff, great, geeky, gorgeous other stuff that's as multi-facted and fun as the people themselves. It's my turn and I've found a couple must-haves for the gadget fanatics you'll be shopping for this year.

Apple TV

Out of all the Apple devices that we've got floating around in our home, our Apple TV probably gets just as much use as our iPhones. It makes everything from streaming Netflix and Hulu to accessing your purchased content super simple. When we have friends and family over it's simple to share YouTube videos from our iPhones, iPads, and other devices straight to the larger screen.

This year's Apple TV offers full 1080p making the viewing experience even better. There isn't a day that goes by that we don't use our Apple TV whether it's to stream music, access purchased movies, rent content, browse YouTube, or stream our favorite shows on Netflix and Hulu. At only $99, it's a no brainer if you've got a friend or relative that already utilizes other Apple products in their home. It'll make the perfect add-on companion and they'll love you for it.

Mophie Powerstation

I've never been a fan of battery cases since they add so much bulk. Other solutions like the Mophie Powerstation not only give you a portable way to charge your iPhone (or any smartphone for that matter), but other devices as well. Since the input is simply USB, you can use your existing cables and charge whatever you'd like. Share it with friends, and pass it around.

If you know someone who is always complaining about battery life, the Mophie Powerstation makes a great gift regardless what smartphone or tablet they have. They also pack a lot more power than a standard battery case backup can which means more charges.

Lifeproof for iPhone

Running a business that specializes in iPhone, iPad, and iPod repair means I see a lot of water damaged devices. Lifeproof cases, if installed correctly, can eliminate water damage 100% of the time. If you have a friend or family member who is particularly clumsy with their iPhone, a Lifeproof case can make a great gift.

Parents can also rest assured that if they're buying an iPhone for a child this Christmas that their investment will be protected. Not only does Lifeproof protect against liquid damage, it also provides a fair amount of protection against drops.

iPad mini

When I first purchased my iPad mini I honestly did not think I'd ever use it. I figured I'd leave it at the office for work use but continue to use my iPad 3 like always. Boy was I wrong.

I've never found a way to actually integrate the iPad into my daily life other than writing on it while out of the office and I only ever did that when a computer wasn't within reach. While I still prefer the standard size iPad with my keyboard case for writing, literally everything else is better on the iPad mini. I've actually found myself browsing on it a lot more than I ever did on any other iPad I've owned. The size is perfect for reading in bed or in a car and casually surfing the web on the couch.

The iPad mini has become my go-to device for browsing, reading, playing games, and reading emails while my iPad 3 has remained at the office for heavier stuff. If you have a loved one who desperately wants an iPad for personal use, you can't go wrong with the iPad mini.

Nokia Lumia 920

I've never been a huge fan of the Android platform and the first few iterations of Windows Phone didn't really pique my interest but I've always been a fan of Nokia hardware back to the N95. It is still one of my favorite phones I've ever owned to date. It was amazing for its time.

Windows Phone has come a long way in my opinion and Nokia makes some of the best hardware and mobile cameras in the industry and the Nokia Lumia 920 is no exception. Everything from the screen to the camera to wireless charging makes it one of the best Windows Phone offerings to date.

While I have no intention of giving up my iPhone 5, there are people out there that don't want Apple products in their ecosystem. If you've got someone in your life that's really hoping for a new phone this holiday season but they don't want an iPhone, I'm positive they'd be glad to receive a Lumia 920. You can pick one up unlocked and contract free for $599 or on contract with AT&T for as little as $99.

The Best and Worst 3D Movies

3D movies are on fire right now, what with Life of Pi thrilling holiday audiences and The Great Gatsby and Oz: The Great and Powerful on the way. 3D had its first major push back in the 1950s as a Hollywood ploy to get people away from those new-fangled TV sets and back into theaters. Audiences bitched about wearing the glasses, but enjoyed watching the action jump out at them. These days, Hollywood is using 3D to get us away from watching movies on smart phones and iPads. The studios want us to feel the excitement of 3D ongiant IMAX screens and 3D home theater units. The bother of the glasses and the bump in ticket prices doesn't matter if the 3D delivers. Here are 10 of the best 3D movies (and three of the worst).

Scuba diving is a complicated sport that requires training and endurance. Scuba diving is not for the faint of heart, or for those who would shrink at the though of being submerged in water for a long time. This is not to say that scuba diving chooses its players because almost everyone can be a scuba diver, provided they do not have the age and health limitations.

Children as young as fifteen years old and in good health can train on scuba diving to prepare themselves for certification. However, all those interested to undergo training should fill up a health questionnaire and undergo medical checkups to determine their physical conditions.

While scuba divers have more opportunity to admire the fishery resources of the world, divers also dive for other reasons such as for scientific, commercial, military or recreational purposes.

Divers cannot go scuba diving without a certification even if they are doing it for fun. Majority of scuba divers do so for recreational purposes but they still have to undergo certification. Recreational divers can choose from a variety of specialization like underwater photography, search and rescue diving or night diving. Once they become experts in diving they can turn it into a career and become dive masters or underwater photographers.

There are however divers who dive for commercial purposes like for the purpose of salvaging sunken ships, constructing bridges and dams or to build underwater structures. Scientific divers focus on diving for the purpose of research.

A scuba diver must necessarily be a good swimmer who can float on water and swim fairly long distances. Basic swimming skills plus good health will make you eligible for certification as a diver.

A diver must tale note of his safety all of the time not only by getting proper training but also by making use of basic scuba diving gears like masks, fins and snorkels. A beginner can just rent the basic diving gear but if you intend to make this sport a long-term commitment then it would be best to buy the equipment. These three basic diving gear are every affordable and can be bought anywhere.

However, there is other diving gear that are more expensive like wet or dry suits, regulators or buoyancy compensators and scuba diving tanks. To make the most of your scuba diving gear, make sure to rinse them with fresh or tap water after using them. Allow them to dry but not in direct sunlight since they are made of rubber and can easily break down and deteriorate.

The basic diving gear is the same for most divers but specialty divers may have use for more sophisticated gadgets and equipment. But whatever kind of diving you do, always make sure to use the safety gears to protect yourself from the dangers of diving.

The heart of a good business.....Customer Service - Thrifty 101

Over the past few days I've had some experiences with customer service I'd like to share. I work in a customer service oriented job. Some times "policies" needs to be bent to keep good customers. Here are two examples:

I have a friend that works for Banana Republic. She had a lady come in the day after Black Friday with her Black Friday receipt saying she forgot to use her coupon on Black Friday. (this is in a new outlet mall so they had coupons for the whole mall) The manager informed my friend to void everything on the receipt by hand, then re-ring it everything up by hand with her coupon at the Black Friday price.? She didn't require the lady bring back all the items so they could be scanned which would have been easier and quicker for the company and cashier. She took care of the customer, helped her and made it right by her. For advertising purposes this is the Banana Republic at the Outlets at Traverse Mountain in Lehi, UT. Highly recommend them, great customer service.

On the flip side...

I went to a store yesterday to pick up a Facebook claim offer for $2 vinyl that they do every week and have for years. I'm a returning customer and I've always just gone to the desk and asked for the $2 vinyl.
Yesterday I was greeted by a lady that made me feel like my very presence and the fact that I was asking her anything was an annoyance to her. I asked for the $2 vinyl and I got a snotty "Do you have a coupon or code for it?" I told her I didn't know I needed one and that I could pull it up on Facebook on my phone. I struggled with poor phone service, slow phone, my phone froze as I showed them I was on the last step...and the whole time the employees watched me struggle and didn't say a word. 40 minutes later I gave up trying to pull up the offer and left the store with nothing.
Frustrated I went to Facebook and voiced my frustration on their page. (ah, the power of social media) I got back what I thought were two VERY rude responses. They implemented the "claim code" policy 3 weeks ago. They basically said the policy is you HAVE to have a coupon. The owner has told the employees no exceptions. Sorry for your inconvenience but they are doing what I told them to do. Then they alluded that I was trying to "stretch" the rules. You can read the whole dialog HERE. (on the right side under Michelle Smith)

Good customer service would have been to tell me in the store "We can see you've been struggling trying to get this offer up. Next time make sure you have it beforehand, but we'll give it to you today." Or after I wrote to them on Facebook maybe offering to comp me shipping if I still wanted to claim the offer.

Because I voiced a complaint on Facebook and because their response was so poorly managed, there are now 11 comments under my post and they all are stating how rude the owner is being in their response and some are stating that they will not shop their again. All this negative publicity over a $2 vinyl and sticking with your "policy". Customer Service is the heart of a business. It's not always about the mighty dollar.

I am even more disappointed in their reply then I was with them yesterday. I wasn't trying to get away with anything. Good grief, it's a $2 vinyl! I will NEVER shop there again. And lucky me, I have a blog that I can vent this all on. And as to not show any bias.....for advertising purposes this was the Vinyl 4 Decor store in the South Towne Mall in Sandy UT.
