Yale College Lecturer Explores Cultures of the Globe

Yale College art and design students will be widening their horizons with globally sourced resources, thanks to historical and contextual studies co-ordinator Julia Strong.

On a month long trip over the summer holidays, dedicated tutor Julia, visited Japan, Australia and Bali to research world cultures for Yale College?s autumn theme entitled ?home?.

Gaining unique experiences and collating outstanding resources on her incredible travels, Julia has met up with a Geisha in the Gion quarter of Kyoto, had an authentic meal and tea ceremony in the home of a Japanese family as well as going on a walkabout in the Mossman Gorge rainforest with an Aboriginal guide in Australia.

Hailing arts and crafts workshops and magnificent temples on the paradise island of Bali as ?extraordinary?, Julia has collected artefacts, music and costumes on her travels to be used in incredible College teaching sessions.

?I am keen to encourage students to be more aware of other cultures and gain by sharing my experiences through their own learning,? says Julia, ?I want to inspire them to travel and make discoveries for themselves.?

Julia created a richly illustrated travel Blog called ?Julia?s Home from Home travels? to enable colleagues and students at Yale College to share in her month-long global journey of discovery.

Schwarzenegger: Shriver changed tune on recall run

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Arnold Schwarzenegger says his wife, Maria Shriver, was told to "snap out of it" by her mother for her attempts to persuade him against running for California governor in 2003, a conversation that ultimately opened the door to his successful candidacy.

Eunice Shriver told her daughter that her husband would be "angry for the rest of his life" if she stopped his ambitions, Schwarzenegger writes in his new autobiography, "Total Recall: My Unbelievably True Life Story."

The former governor says in the book that he had decided against running to recall Gov. Gray Davis after his wife implored him not to for the sake of their family. Maria Shriver announced his decision to their four children.

But he writes that when Maria Shriver told her mother about her efforts to thwart Schwarzenegger's political ambitions, Eunice told her daughter that women in their family "always support the men when they want to do something." Schwarzenegger says he didn't know about the conversation at the time, but learned of it later.

Maria Shriver then softened her stance, paving the way for Schwarzenegger to announce his candidacy on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," where he says he felt most comfortable.

The announcement came after a week of wavering. Schwarzenegger says before he headed to the TV appearance, his wife handed him two pieces of paper with talking points she had written: one in case he decided to run, another in case he decided not to.

He writes that Shriver went on to become a key ally and adviser to his campaign and eventual governorship.

Schwarzenegger has often said that Maria's mother and her father, Sargent Shriver, were essential to his eventual decision to seek public office, and the most "extraordinary human beings I've ever met." But he also writes in the book that he often teased his wife that the close-knit Democratic Kennedy clan was "like a bunch of clones" because there was such conformity among them.

A spokesman for Shriver, Matthew DiGirolamo, declined to comment on the contents of the book.

"Total Recall" will officially be published next week. The Associated Press purchased an early copy.

The book is part of an effort by the onetime "Mr. Universe" and Hollywood action star to rebrand himself after leaving office with a mixed record and subsequent embarrassing revelations about a fling he had with the family's housekeeper. Schwarzenegger, who fathered a son with the housekeeper, says he also let the boy down.

Schwarzenegger, 65, said he avoided telling his wife for years about the boy, who is now a teenager, even when Shriver asked him, partly because of his longtime penchant for secrecy, and his fear that the news would become public and undermine his political career. He told his wife in January 2011, when she confronted him the day after he left office.

In an interview with "60 Minutes" scheduled to air Sunday, Schwarzenegger said having sex with his housekeeper was "the stupidest thing" he ever did to his now-estranged wife and caused great pain to her and their four children. CBS aired excerpts of the interview Friday.

"I think it was the stupidest thing I've done in the whole relationship. It was terrible. I inflicted tremendous pain on Maria and unbelievable pain on the kids," Schwarzenegger tells "60 Minutes."

Schwarzenegger says he also let down the son he fathered with the housekeeper.

Shriver filed for divorce in July.

In his book, the usually ebullient Schwarzenegger admits to some loneliness, even though he packed his schedule with speeches, projects and movie-making after Shriver and the children moved out of the house. He said his career had been fun for 30 years because he shared it with Maria.

They had done everything together, he writes.

The former GOP governor also writes about a 2003 White House meeting with Karl Rove in which the top GOP strategist told him the recall would not happen and instead introduced the actor to then-national security adviser Condoleezza Rice as his pick to run for California governor in 2006.

Schwarzenegger felt snubbed.

He asks, "How could Rove have been so wrong?"

Rove's office said he was traveling Friday and could not be reached for comment.

Rice's chief of staff at Stanford University, Georgia Godfrey, said Rice cannot recall "any conversation on this subject."

"She has stated many times in the past that she has no desire to run for public office and those sentiments have still not changed," Godfrey said in a statement emailed to The Associated Press.

Wonderopolis ? Blog Archive ? Can Parrots Really Talk?

Did you know?

Squawk! Polly wants a cracker! Pretty bird! Pretty bird! These are just a few of the things you might hear coming out of a parrot?s mouth.

If you have pets or just love animals, you may have wished from time to time that you could have real conversations with them. Wouldn?t it be nice to be able to talk with your dog about how your day at school went?

If you have a pet parrot, could your wish come true? Parrots and certain other birds do seem to be able to talk, but can they hold a real conversation?

Not really! Although parrots seem to be able to talk, they?re not really talking like humans. They?re not choosing and saying words with specific meanings. Instead, they?re simply imitating sounds they?ve heard.

Repeating sounds they?ve heard before ? often many times ? is called mimicry. The ?talking? we hear from parrots can consist of imitations of all sorts of sounds, from spoken words to creaking doors to barking dogs.

Just because they?re not really ?talking? doesn?t mean that parrots? mimicry isn?t impressive. Did you know that parrots don?t have vocal cords like humans? It?s true! Instead, parrots use muscles in their throat to direct airflow through their mouths to mimic the sounds they hear around them.

Parrots, such as African Greys and Amazons, aren?t the only birds that can learn to imitate sounds, including human voices. Some other birds known for their ability to ?talk? include Indian Ringneck Parakeets, Budgies and Cockatiels.

If you?re WONDERing why some birds imitate sounds they hear, it?s because they?re social creatures. They feel a need to be able to interact with those around them. When kept as pets, these birds see their human owners as their family and want to communicate with them.

Since a human owner usually can?t learn a bird?s ?language,? the bird instead tries to learn the language of its owner. Although these birds are often quite intelligent, imitation is still the best that they can manage. Mimicry becomes a way for them to get attention and interact with their owners.

If you want to have a bird that talks as a pet, the best thing to do is to find a bird that already knows how to imitate sounds. Even if a bird knows how to imitate a few sounds, though, you?ll still need to spend lots of time training it and providing positive interactions to encourage more ?talking.?

tchipakkan: Happy Fall Equinox

??? It's gotten chilly enough that we now keep the front door closed except for occasional mid-day warm spells. The trees are beginning to show color, and most houses have mums out front. Last week a cold snap wiped out the jewelweed, and now the blue New England Asters are coming in. More dramatic are the yellow leaves of the milkweed, which are startling against the green background in most places. I'll probably never think of them again as the fun floating seeds or the dried pods often used in fall arrangements. Now they are the subtle poison that can kill sheep, even though my herding days are past. Still, the nasturtium and morning glories continue their brave display, and frankly I have little energy to enjoy much of the natural world. If I had time to get out, I would continue my war against knotweed, but it has invaded the herb garden, and I feel a stab of annoyance each time I go out to my car.

?? ?My car is the main thing on my mind right now, as it died on me last week, but I should probably start that story back then.
?? ?I've mentioned that Dad has pancreatic cancer, and has a metal stent keeping the tumor from choking off his bile duct. Other than that, he's doing very well. He has no pain, his brain is clear and he's getting about as well as he has this past year. This means not much, his friends mostly come to visit him, and he likes reading and playing on the computer. Since the cancer, he's more tired and naps more, morning and afternoons, as well as hitting the hay early.
?? ?I got to see this when I went up and stayed with him and Liz last week. I wanted to see him, and to give Liz a bit of respite. Kitty and Trish are thinking the same way. I went up from Monday to Friday, and Kitty was coming to stay as long as possible, arriving Friday when I was leaving, and Trish also comes in a lot. Liz, as you may or may not know, lives in the "in-law" apartment downstairs, which she's renovated this past year.
?? ?That week happened to be the week of the County Fair, and Liz and I popped over there for a bit one day- I got an "onion blossom", and Liz got fried dough- our favorite "fair treats". I also got some local honey. We saw Charley and the Flicks there at the pavilion where people eat their food, and listen to country music. Dad didn't feel up to coming this year, even when one of his friends invited him to go to the races. When the weather was warm enough for the sliding doors to be open we could hear the midway from the kitchen, because that's how close his house is to the fairgrounds.
?? ?There's a fairly constant stream of friends coming through to chat, and bringing treats. Aunt Patty (who lives in northern NH) came by with rhubarb cake and fresh vegetables. I made him Apple pie, and V8 aspic (something I'd never tried before, but was pretty good). Liz made a pumpkin custard I liked so much I made it myself when I got home. As she points out, it's dead easy, and without crust, is a no-guilt dessert. When I say dead easy it's this simple:
?? ?1 can pumpkin
?? ?1 or 2 eggs
?? ?1 can sweetened condensed milk (OK, maybe a little guilt)
?? ?1 tsp. pumpkin pie spice
Bake at 350? until firm, in a baking dish. It'll take about 30 minutes depending on the size and shape of your dish. Liz and Willow tend to think it and pumpkin pie are best eaten with about equal volumes of whipped cream, but I like it all by itself.
?? ?The last night, when Kitty was up, we had a lovely roast beef with Yorkshire Pudding. Actually, I made two- one in the meat drippings around the roast, and one with butter. Two of us preferred it with drippings, and two preferred it with butter. I'm sure what we didn't eat that night didn't go to waste.
?? ?We did "sisterly" things like picking new fabric for the curtains for camp, although I thought we both liked it, I am fairly certain that Liz and Kitty will pick a different fabric on the next trip. (I love the country atmosphere- the lady let us take a bolt with a few yards on it to take to the lake to match against the couches there.) Kitty brought her homework to grade (she's an art teacher), and other projects. I think my embroidery and Kitty's papers drive Liz crazy. She keeps her area gorgeous, and we tend to leave our stuff where it will be convenient when we come back to it. She refers to Kitty's stuff as "Kitty litter", I have no idea what mine gets called!
?? ?Liz loaned me the use of her computer so I could do my talkshow that Wednesday. Aren't computers wonderful? They don't care from where you log in. Sadly, I missed MY computer with all my files I knew how to access. I read a lot, and worked on my embroidery, and probably caught up on my sleep as well. Liz got to take off a few times. Kitty came out with Buster, her Akita. She's staying out at her cabin at camp, while I stayed in the guest room. As it's downstairs, it's something like sleeping in a cave- very dark.
?? ?As I try not to drive after dark, I headed down about 3, and just before I got to 95 in Auburn, the car stopped going. I'd press the accelerator and it would rev, but not push the car. Triple A towed me to Pep Boys, about the only place still open, (why do these things only happen at the close of business Friday? Isn't that when we all get sick too?) and the gentleman called around for me and suggested that Butch at B&M auto was good. The fellows at Pep Boys said the same thing after diagnosing a blown transmission. Kitty came down to get me, and offered to drive me home- but then I'd have a car 3 hours away from where I was, so I went back up to Farmington, and spent another night. Dad offered me the use of his car, but it hasn't been driven for months, and is very old, and cranky. For instance after his mechanic spent 8 hours chasing down a short that drains the battery, he finally installed a "kill switch" to turn everything off when you aren't using it, and you have to turn it on again to get the car to go. Liz was dubious about the brakes, and then Trish offered to pay to rent me a car. I felt a little hesitant to accept such a huge donation, but swallowed it, and said yes, and thank you. Wow. I was amazed at how simply having the money made what seemed like an insurmountable problem a non-problem. I think I have subconscious attitudes about money that may be stopping me from making it, but in that one action, I'm feeling much more positively about money.
?? ?I also got to hear some wonderful stories from my family. Trish had "adventures" with infestations of rats in her house, and carpenter ants in her camp. The camp was also getting incursions by a lot of strangers wandering over a public bridge onto her lawn. It seems that they actually own one of three dams that didn't seem to have been taken over by the state. It was wryly fascinating to hear about her going through department after department (Fish and Game, and several others I can't remember) because each handles a different aspect of caring for the water, the bridge, the dam, and mowing the grass on the side of it, and, (what she was trying to do) putting up a no trespassing sign and gate on the end of the bridge. It shouldn't surprise anyone to hear that not all the people who wandered over the bridge from the public land side to picnic on her grass didn't clean up after themselves. Eventually she got the gate.
?? ?That reminds me of Kitty's "adventure": whoever decides these things has decided to raise the level of water in the lake her house is on three feet. I can imagine that not only will it raise the water- up to her foundations, and maybe past, it will eliminate a LOT of the frontage of most of the people who live on that lake. Lake Sabbata I think. Maybe I'm influenced by reading about the Johnstown Flood too recently, but when water goes up, the verge of the water usually spreads a LOT, and I'm thinking that all the homeowners around there would have objections. Kitty, meanwhile, is looking at how to save her house to which she and Paul have been making massive improvements over the years, and there's some question about whether the foundation work would be possible.
?? ?After hearing about this I commented, "Am I the only one without major problems?" before remembering that the reason I was there to hear the stories was because my car had died and I was looking at a tranny replacement or rebuild.
?? ?In the morning we had a family meeting about funeral plans- Dad wants to be cremated, and his ashes put beside Mothers at the cemetary up by the lake. It's VERY steep, so we figured only immediate family for the burial. Then we would have the service in the chapel at Allen's Mills, followed by a reception/gathering at the American Legion. Dad specifically said "No Long faces", and he's chosen "I'll Fly Away" (I like the one from Brother, Where Art Thou?) for his song. A lot better than my brother Bob's choice "Smile (`though your heart is aching)" Jerk! There wasn't a dry eye in the house!) We'll also have the Eddie Arnold song "Anytime (you're feeling lonely)", because Dad sang it to the girls in the hospital. I like it. Since then there have been enough inquiries that the service is now planned to be at the Congregational Church because it's much larger, followed by an afternoon gathering in the Legion hall. The idea has been broached that we could have an ice-cream bar to enhance the more up-beat mood. We will, of course, have to have the spam finger sandwiches. Not only are they traditional, we will always remember Bob's saying "I can hardly wait!" while we were planning Mom's funeral. (He may be dead, but we can still make fun of him.
?? ?Bob and Dad made the lovely box Mother's ashes were in, and dug the grave. Liz was thinking of the blisters after and was going to pay to have it done, but Trish said she wanted to do it. Dad's stone is there already, they only have to add the final date. With Mom's we were surprised by a inexpensive urn inside the cardboard, but I want to try to make an urn for Dad, since I made ?lfwine's. If I can find the portrait I started of him for his 60th birthday, and have time to finish it, I'll bring that too. Earlier this week the girls went over to the Adams (their father ran the funeral parlor we grew up next to) to arrange what services we are going to want. ("Girls", right. They are all pushing 60, and I'm pulling it.) I forget what we decided for "in lieu of flowers"- we were wondering if there's someone working on why Maine's pancreatic cancer rate is 10 times the nations- that would be a good charity to support. So while we keep updating the plans, we are a good way into it.

?? ?Trish and Kitty drove me back to Lewiston where Enterprise was open until noon, and I was back home (sweet home) by 4. The kids had managed to take care of everything without me which made me feel a bit unneeded, and I spent the rest of the day on the computer catching up with email. Well, not really, but the important stuff. I am WAY behind on promoting the con.
??? ?While I'd been unable to go up to the SCA event at Dartmoth that day, I was able to get down to the meeting of "Clan leaders" meeting for Twilight Covening on Sunday. As that's a nearly three hour drive, and I had to leave by 3:30 to get home before dark, that took up a day, and violated our basic rule that you don't spend more time in the car going to an event than you're going to spend there. I am looking forward to Twilight. It's a four day event that allows me to teach things really intensively. Last year I did RunValdr, but this year even when I signed up I knew there might be issues, so I am working with another lady, Sue Arthen, on the "Bottle-nosed Dolphin Clan". Dolphins are one of the animals that are symbol users, and we are going to be diving into the depths of Tarot. Since I have a partner, if disaster strikes, Sue can handle things without me, and that's reassuring. I'd hate to bail and leave everyone scrambling to rearrange everything.
?? ?Butch at B&M said he'd ordered the parts Friday when I'd called, and would probably have the car ready for pick-up Tuesday night. I told him I'd pick it up Wednesday morning (again, avoiding night driving), since that's how long we'd gotten the rental. It was due at 11:30, so I figured I could leave at 8:30, change cars, and then go up to see Dad briefly. (If I'm within an hour, why not?) Wednesdays is when I have my show, so I figured that an hour up and then four hours back, I could be at Dad's by 12:30 or 1, spend an hour or so, then be back home by 6:30 or 7, with plenty of time to spare before my 8 pm show. Since Dad's still in great shape, I asked the kids if they wanted to come see him. (I don't think it's necessarily a great idea to see someone in the last stages of cancer. One wants to remember a loved one the way they usually were.) Willow, Kat and John all decided to come, so that when the Enterprise people dropped us at the garage, we were not happy to discover the van still up on the lift.
?? ?We waited. I kept doing mental math to figure out how much time we had left. Kat and her fast metabolism got hungry. Willow got tired. John walked around in the yard looking bored. I had forgotten to bring something to read. They had two guys actively working on the vans underside, ignoring the frequent phone calls. When they'd been MY calls, this bothered me, (I had gotten through and he'd warned me that there was a late arriving part that needed installing, but it would be done by lunch) but when they were working on my car, I liked them not leaving it. So we waited. (As Mother used to say "I wait very fast").
?? ?What I had brought with us was a box of photo albums. Sometime after we moved to this house, and Mother died, I'd borrowed a half dozen photo albums from her. I think it was because Dan had moved out and I could anticipate the others doing the same. I wanted to collect and make copies of the really good pictures of their family so there wouldn't be the issue my generation was having of "who's got which picture?". They might not want them when they were in their twenties, but I figured years down the line, they might want a picture of me as a kid, as a teen, as a young mother, as an old mother, and ditto ?lfwine. I figured they'd like pictures of their grandparents, (old and young) and uncles and aunts, and great grandparents if possible. I know I want those things.
?? ?Of course, as with so many other projects, it got shelved. A lot of that was because scanning and printing technology wasn't as advanced fifteen years ago. Who knows how many pictures my computer back then could have held? Well, I pulled those down and have been scanning my little heart out.
?? ?This is a picture of my grandmother Nellie (whose birthday, February 8th, I share). She had 14 brothers and sisters, and they all made it to adulthood. Impressive eh? Shes the one on the upper right. I've found I look just like her when I reach the same age (only I'm fatter than she was, and she died her grey hair blonde).

My grandmother Virginia's family (five girls, the youngest was named William) Isabelle, Glen Owens, Willye, Virginia, and Victoria.

?? ?This is a picture of Dad in the war:

This is one of HIS father, Bert, and grandmother, Elenora (which I'd never heard before) and aunt Ellie, and a friend, in 1918. Liz just found me pictures of Bert's 8 siblings. That could account for why when they got married, they had 100 first cousins between them. Mother had 11, Dad had 89. 21 uncles and aunts might account for that, and 89 might account for why Dad didn't bother to keep track of all of his cousins!

This is my mother (as a baby) with her mother and grandmother. (Grandmother was one of the first two women in Chattanooga Tennessee to bob her hair.) Wasn't she gorgeous?

This is my mothers father as a boy from a clipping from 1912 (I think), grandfather at 12, is the boy center front. Grandmother was his second wife, he'd had and lost another wife and three children before he met her. He was a millionaire during the depression, and his sister had an electric car.

And then, here's one of ?lfwine in his prime,

and one of me between Liz and Kitty:

BTW, that's Mother's portrait behind us.

?? ?I'd love to have pictures of my extended family like these, and hope I can get more, and make them available for the kids. Yes, it's great to have them on the computer, but I trust hard copies more.
?? ?
?? ?I think that's enough for these two weeks, although I could say more. I will mention that our culture makes it difficult for someone in our position- having a loved one dying. The weekend before I went up to Maine, we did two events: Saturday was the White Mountain Pagan Harvest Festival in Plymoth, NH.
I got to talk to Kirk White, whose father had died of pancreatic cancer too a few years ago. His father had lived until they left on a long-planned vacation, and then died quickly. He's fairly certain his dad just needed him to leave before he could die. Other people live until their families gather, or until some deadline that means something to them passes. It's incredibly personal. What I'm finding is that I'm avoiding mentioning it, because I don't want to look like I'm fishing for sympathy. At the same time, this is one of the central facts of my life just now. For the last ten years or so I haven't gone up to visit as much as I'd like because I'm a cheapskate and didn't want to spend the gas. Now that I know there may not be many more chances, it would seem a false economy. I hate not being honest with people, because Dad's dying does motivate a lot of what I'm doing these days, but at the same time, I know most people don't want to hear about it. Still, not mentioning the real reason makes the stuff I'm doing seem without justification.
?? ?I figure it's appropriate to warn the organizers of upcoming events where I'll be speaking that I might have to bail on them without too much warning, but at the same time, I'm not comfortable with people's reactions. People seem upset, and generally tell me they're sorry. I'm kind of sorry too- it would be good to have him around as long as I want him, but as Mother said (as she was announcing her terminal diagnosis) "We all die, dear." Strange job, calling all your kids and consoling them because you're dying. Funny world. I feel the same way, that I have to apologize for bringing death (the D word) into other people's already complicated lives. All those books I read this year about death and dying and funerals, and not one explained why we have such a hard time dealing with death. I seem particularly poor at figuring out other people's motivations. It was good to have Kirk to talk with because he didn't seem terribly disturbed about talking about it either. The Harvest Faire was fairly small, and the next day the Eastern Mass Pagan Pride Day was fairly huge. I taught two workshops in the morning, then promoted my little heart out for CTCW. Chris LaFond did the final ritual and he and friends from Earth Spirit? did one of their "web weaving" rituals. Earth Spirit is very good at rituals. I was one of the "spokes" of the web. People in the middle held one end and on the outside held the other, then everyone else had colored yarn they wove in and out and tied to the spokes. It was a gorgeous day and I wore my shiny gold hat, but when I saw pictures of myself, holy moses have I gotten fat! Good thing my personality shines through when I talk to people, eh? Or maybe looking at old pictures of myself has me thinking I still look as I used to. Ah well, if I can find a way to lose the weight I will. If not, not.

?? ?But it's time to get this out and off, and I suppose I could say don't be surprised if it's late again, but clearly, I missed last week because I was in Maine, then I'm a day late because of spending all day yesterday on the road.
?? ?Oh, I didn't tell you the end of the story. On the way back down, trying to get home before the show started (I made it with 20 minutes to spare), the car suddenly started sounding like we were going over rumble strips when we weren't. This morning I took it to Winkles, and Robert checked it out and says that the transmission is still in trouble. He said that if it was him, he'd want to be given the chance to put it right, so I called Butch and he asked if I'd be coming up that way soon. I figure I can go see Dad again while he fixes it. Robert says that when they do a major fix like that they do an extended test drive, and I think they may have been rushing because we were there waiting. Butch has also offered to loan me a car to use while he fixes it because it will take most of a day. I'm pleased that he is being good about it.

?? ?Since it's been two weeks, I've probably forgotten something, but if it's important I'll have to let you know next week.

Truck deals, pent-up demand boost September U.S. auto sales

DETROIT (Reuters) - U.S. auto sales will likely rise 8 percent or more in September as dealers offered generous cash incentives on pickup trucks that amounted to as much as $10,000 a vehicle in some areas of the United States, analysts said.

The annual sales rate is expected to be around 14.5 million in September, according to a Reuters poll. That would mark the fourth straight month the sales rate has held above 14 million, buoyed by pent-up demand and attractive credit terms.

Automakers, led by General Motors Co , are offering the cash incentives to help sell down excess truck inventory at a time when truck sales typically accelerate, analysts said.

Truck demand been slightly weaker than usual this year, due in part to high gasoline prices that have stayed near $4 a gallon this year, Kelley Blue Book analyst Alec Gutierrez said.

"There are some pretty sizable incentives out there," he said. "All the manufacturers overestimated the strength of the truck market this year and probably overproduced."

Analysts were quick to point out that the incentives are not large enough to signal a return to Detroit's historic pattern of offering steep discounts to meet outsized sales targets.

In fact, incentive spending overall fell 6.7 percent this month as cars and crossovers commanded higher prices, auto research firm TrueCar.com said.

But investors are concerned about high truck inventory levels. GM has 122 days of trucks on lots, well above the roughly 80 days considered optimal. Ford Motor Co has roughly 77 days, while Chrysler Group LLC has 99 days.

GM is offering as much as $3,500 cash back on its 2012 Chevrolet Silverado to cut inventory. In response, Ford is providing up to $5,500 back on 2012 F-150, while Chrysler is offering up to $4,000 in rebates on its Ram 1500, according to KBB, which tracks vehicle pricing.

Some GM dealers are offering as much as $10,000 cash back, Jefferies analyst Peter Nesvold said. For example, Jim Ellis Buick GMC Atlanta is offering that deal this month on the 2012 GMC Sierra 1500, the Atlanta-based dealer said on its website.

"That's clearly not a sustainable number," Nesvold said. "But right now I think the market will draw some relief that GM is able to sell down excess inventory in a measured way."

MIXED ECONOMIC DATA

Last year, Japanese automakers were hurt by inventory shortages stemming from the March 11 earthquake in Japan. In September, both Toyota Motor Corp and Honda Motor Co are projected to show higher market share and double-digit gains.

The U.S. auto industry is now in its third year of recovery after a scathing economic downturn forced GM and Chrysler to undergo government-funded bankruptcy restructurings in 2009.

During the downturn, Americans postponed new vehicle purchases. Now vehicle sales have benefited as more of these consumers' vehicles push past the point of repair. Attractive credit terms have also helped boost sales.

Edmunds.com, which tracks auto industry data, expects sales to grow about 13 percent this year to 14.4 million. It also predicts sales will grow just 4 percent in 2013 to 15 million.

That would make 2013 "the first year of non-double digit sales growth since the recovery began," Edmunds Chief Economist Lacey Plache said.

"It's economic uncertainty, which we're getting due to the unresolved fiscal issues at home and those actual and feared spillover effects from the slowing economies abroad," she said.

Among the biggest risks is Europe, where sales are falling as austerity keeps potential buyers away from showrooms. In China, the growth in new car demand has also slowed slightly.

The U.S. auto sales report is among the first snapshots of the American consumer each month. In August, the U.S. auto industry posted its best August in five years.

The sales pace indicated that consumers were faring better in the third quarter after weak consumption held back U.S. economic growth in the second quarter.

Still, Americans' assessment of the economic recovery continues to be mixed. On Friday, a key measure of U.S. consumer sentiment rose to its highest level in four months, but it fell short of economists' forecasts.

IGT defend DoubleDown gamble - Online Gambling News

Jamie Hinks

USA flag 1International Game Technology CEO Patti Hart has defended their big money purchase of social gaming firm DoubleDown Casino. Hart, speaking to the Las Vegas Review-Journal at the IGT HQ, said the $500million acquisition could eventually be ?the best investment? the firm has ever made. She added: ?It?s a big sticker price, but that?s what it takes to play. We believe we structured the deal completely appropriately. That allowed us to retain the management team. In the Seattle office, there has been almost zero turnover. That?s unheard of in previous IGT deals.?

IGT is putting most of their eggs in the DoubleDown basket after they decided to get out of the online poker game by letting go of the former Entraction network last month.

North America?s major sports leagues have again drawn the ire of New Jersey Governor Chris Christie this time at a regional town hall meeting. Press of Atlantic City report that Christie was questioned on sports betting and reiterated his desire to bring betting to certain parts of the state.

?I would like to see it sent to Atlantic City and Monmouth racetrack to bring revenue to the city and the state. If it is monitored and controlled, it will be good for the people in New Jersey and the industry,? Christie said.

As for the major sports leagues and NCAA, he called them ?hypocritical? in that they know that unregulated and ?illegal? sport betting is already going on ?every day?. The row has already reached boiling point and fellow New Jersey politican Senator Raymond Lesniak has been stoking the fire for a while now with the latest from Christie showing that the tide is not relenting.

Three more firms will hear their Nevada online poker licence fate next week with Boyd Interactive, Fertitta Interactive and Golden Nugget all on the agenda at the gaming board?s next meeting. The three companies have applied for online poker operator licences and will see applications go before the Nevada Gaming Control Board on October 3-4. If they are successful their names will be added to a list that includes three licenced operators and a further seven firms with licences including one affiliate.

Viewing gender-specific objects influences perception of gender identity

Thursday, September 27, 2012

Spending too much time looking at high heels may influence how a viewer perceives the gender of an androgynous face, according to new research published Sep. 26 in the open access journal PLOS ONE by Amir Homayoun Javadi of Technische Universit?t, Dresden and his colleagues. The study sheds new light on how the objects surrounding us may influence our perceptions of gender.

The authors found that when people view objects highly associated with one gender, like high heels for women or electric shavers for men, for a short period of time and are then asked to identify the gender of an androgynous face, they are more likely to identify it as being of the gender opposite to that associated with the stimuli.

Previous studies have demonstrated that continuous exposure to certain visual stimuli causes short and long term adaptations with temporary aftereffects due to repeated stimulation of specific pathways in the brain. For example, after prolonged exposure to a red screen, a viewer is more likely to perceive a white screen as being green (the perceptual opposite of red). This study, though, is the first demonstrating that such adaptation can occur for a more abstract feature like gender perception.

The authors suggest two possible explanations for their results. The first possibility they suggest is that common brain regions may be involved in identifying gender-associated objects and identifying the gender of androgynous faces, so the effect is akin to what occurs in the red screen-white screen example above. Alternately, the researchers suggest that a higher cognitive function of 'adapting to gender' may modulate the process of 'assigning gender', whether to an object or an androgynous face.

"This study highlights how exposure to objects in our environment can affect our perception of gender in everyday life" says Javadi, lead author of the paper.

A Different Drum: My Craft Room

I am very blessed to have a room all to me just for crafting and sewing. Do I use it? Well, not much yet. How is it that I have such a room? Truthfully, our house is a really dumb layout, and in order to rectify that situation a little, we put an addition on in 2010/11. Mainly the addition was built to enable us to have enough bedrooms to house seven children, but it gave us the opportunity to have a couple of bonus rooms too. In Canada, we have basements (or most homes do anyways). I think, it's due to the fact that the ground usually freezes quite deep in the winter here. Basements help make better foundations and a big bonus -- make one's house that much bigger!

The craft room is a result of our addition. It's bright with sunshine in the afternoon. I can't wait to spend hours down there creating on wintery afternoons. There's lots of room for me to lay out patterns on the island or spread my scrapbooking everywhere (does anyone else have that problem? My scrapbooking materials seem to have a mind of their own and spread across the entire table.) There's lots of space on the floor yet for the little munchkin to play if she wants to be near me.

Let me take you on a picture tour:

This is the northwest view. The island was the children's work station when we were homeschooling, but it has always been a home for my fabric stash. The ribbon lying on the island is on a curtain rod that has yet to be mounted on the wall.
The south east corner. The Clavinova is in here so that the musicians can practice with out making mom crazy ;o), or to letting sleeping children sleep. Leading out of the room is the little hall that leads to this room. You don't want to see that hall as it's currently full of stuff that needs to be put away in the storage area. Things kind of exploded over the summer :oS.
The east wall, aka the crafty wall. The bookshelves hold craft idea books, my thrifted wool stash, scrapbooking materials, etc.
And this mess? Well that's my sewing table with all my projects, mending, etc. overflowing off the end on to the floor. Yep, I live in the real world. My craft room will never fit the pages of a fancy home decor magazine. It will always be in a state of incompleteness and some form of messiness.

The next step? To get some stuff on the walls, and get a bunch of the other things on my list crossed off so that I can actually do some playing in my craft room.

Blessings!

Ark. first Southern state to vote on medical pot

David Mcnew / Getty Images

In this Sept 7. photo, marijuana plants grow at the Perennial Holistic Wellness Center, a not-for-profit medical marijuana dispensary in Los Angeles, Calif. On the November ballot, Arkansas voters will be asked whether centers like these can be legal in its state.

By NBC News staff and wire services

Come November, Arkansas voters will be faced with a question unprecedented in the South: Should qualified patients be allowed to buy medical marijuana from nonprofit dispensaries with a doctor's recommendation?

The Arkansas Supreme Court upheld the proposed ballot measure on Thursday, making "The Natural State" the first in the South to ask its voters about medical marijuana, The Associated Press reported. Seventeen other states and the District of Columbia have already legalized medical marijuana to some degree.

The court's review of "The Arkansas Medical Marijuana Act" came after the Coalition to Preserve Arkansas Values filed a lawsuit in August that tried to get the proposal off the state's ballot, NBC station KARK 4 of Little Rock reported. The conservative coalition claimed that the 384-word ballot question doesn't properly explain the consequences of passing the 8,700-word law, according to the AP. Even if the act were passed,?approved patients could still be prosecuted under federal law.

"We hold that it is an adequate and fair representation without misleading tendencies or partisan coloring," the court wrote. "Therefore, the act is proper for inclusion on the ballot at the general election on Nov. 6, 2012, and the petition is therefore denied."

The conservative coalition, which includes leaders from the Arkansas Faith and Ethics Council, the Families First Foundation and the Family Council Action Committee, has five days to ask the court for a rehearing, according to KARK 4.

Jerry Cox, the head of the Arkansas Family Council and a member of a coalition of groups opposed to the proposed medical marijuana ballot measure, holds a copy of the proposal as he speaks to reporters in Little Rock, Ark. on Thursday.

An attorney for Arkansas for Compassionate Care ? the group behind the measure ? said he is pleased with the ruling.

"Now that we've passed muster with the Supreme Court we'll begin our campaign to show the people of the state of Arkansas that this is truly a compassionate measure," attorney David Couch told the AP.

Following the decision, opponents soon?responded on Thursday.

"We've shifted into campaign mode," coalition spokesman Larry Page said, according to KARK 4. "We respect the court's decision, but we are very disappointed that this flawed measure will appear on the ballot."

According to the AP, the proposal lets qualified patients or designated caregivers grow marijuana if the patient lives more than five miles away from a dispensary. It also allows minors to use medical marijuana with parental consent. Cancer, Alzheimer's disease, glaucoma, HIV and AIDS would all be qualifying health conditions.

Arkansas Gov. Mike Beebe, a Democrat, is against the measure and told reporters Thursday that he's requested an estimate on how much it will cost to regulate the dispensaries if voters pass it.

"If I understand what I think I understand about it, if it passes, it's going to require a whole of administration from the health department," Beebe said, according to the AP. "I don't know where we're going to get it from."

Beebe also told reporters that he doesn't believe Arkansas voters would legalize medical marijuana.

While voters in Arkansas and Massachusetts are expected to have their say on this issue on the November ballot, voters in North Dakota won't, after its state Supreme Court ruled the?initiative?can't appear on its ballot, the AP reported.

Empty Russell Street Lot In Downtown Baltimore Will Soon Become ...

BALTIMORE?(WJZ)?In just a few months, crews will break ground on what?s to become a Harrah?s casino in downtown Baltimore.

Monique Griego was there as project leaders laid out their plans for slots and possibly table games.

Baltimore, get ready because soon?an empty lot off Russell and Worcester streets in downtown Baltimore will be transformed into a world-class Harrah?s casino.

?It?s going to add more people to come as tourists because Baltimore is upcoming,? said Mike Beauford, resident.

City and state leaders also touted the economic benefits as the casino?s general manager was introduced.

?To be able to keep the state of Maryland monies in Maryland is our goal,? said Chad Barnhill, Harrah?s general manager.

Construction is set to start in mid-2013 and the casino is expected to open in mid-2014.

And with it will come several thousand slots and employment opportunities.

Two thousand workers will be needed for construction.

The casino itself will have 1,200 permanent positions and an additional 500 jobs will be added if expanded gambling is passed by voters in November.

And the issue was hotly debated this summer.

?Not all table games customers play slots. Not all slots customers play table games. We?ll be able to bring in additional tourism to the city,? Barnhill said.

But there are some people who have concerns over the location of the casino and what it will mean for congestion in the area considering it?s so close to both stadiums.

?You?re going to clutter it up with 3,000 more people a night. It?s just going to be a mess,? Harry Kunzy, resident.

?Trying to get in and out at different times is a real problem,? said Debbie Connell, resident.

Project leaders say they are looking at ways to alleviate traffic and feel confident people won?t be disappointed.

The Towson-based Whiting-Turner Contracting Company has been picked to build Baltimore?s casino, a more than $300 million project.

The casino?s website is already up and running. There you can find employment information.? Click here for more.

Religion, state and disorder | Pakistan Today | Latest news ...

The state is losing its capacity to function

The extreme violence in several cities of Pakistan on September 21, 2012, negated the spirit of the officially announced Day for Love of the Prophet and undermined the cause of highlighting the evil designs of the US-based makers of the controversial film.

Violence manifested in various forms like damage to public and private property, looting of shops, stores and banks and setting them on fire, burning down of petrol pumps and cinema houses in Karachi and Peshawar, assaults on media teams, and pitched battles with the police. In Mardan, a church was damaged. A day earlier, September 20, there were violent protests in Islamabad and the army was called out to protect the diplomatic enclave that housed most embassies.

September 21 was a Friday and it was expected that Islamic and opposition parties would engage in public protest after the Friday prayer. The prime minister designated the day as the official protest day and declared it a public holiday in order to make sure that the government gets the credit for practical identification with a widely shared cause.

On the mooring of 21st, the prime minister addressed a specially convened meeting of select people in Islamabad on the issue of the objectionable YouTube film. He repeatedly condemned the film and asked the people to protest against it in a peaceful and orderly manner. His speech, broadcasted live on TV and radio networks, had a lot of similarities with what different religious leaders said on the issue.

Major political parties and religious groups participated in the protest on September 21 which began in a peaceful manner. However, with the passage of time the mainstream political parties were pushed to the sideline or they withdrew and the initiative was wrested by the activists of hard line religious groups who mobilized the people for violence. The most violent incidents took place in Islamabad/Rawalpindi, Karachi, Lahore and Peshawar that housed US embassies and consulates. The leaderless violent mob was out to destroy anything and everything that came in its way. At least 23 people were killed, most of them in Karachi.

What happened on September 20 and 21, needs to be examined thoroughly because it offers insights into the kind of domestic socio-economic landscape is going to become a routine affair in Pakistan and how the state of Pakistan can descend into chaos.

These developments manifested once again the polarization in the religious sections of population into those advocating peaceful and moderate approach and those pursuing an aggressive and often violent approach for pursuing their religio-political agendas.

This is not the first time that religiously charged groups used violence to protest for their grievances. The protest against the cartoons six years ago also turned violent in Lahore and some other cities. However, this time violence was more intense because hard line and militant religious groups have gained strength since then.

The leaders who called for protest were either totally absent from the streets or they delivered hard-hitting speeches at the beginning of the protest and then returned to their safe hideouts. The prime minister who made an appeal for protest should have advised his parliamentarians to be vigilant in their constituencies to keep the protest under limit. None of the influential leaders was seen in the street protest. This left the field to the activists of hard line militant groups who created violent mob hysteria.

The violent protest was dominated by the activists of Jamaat-i-Islami, Jamaat-ud-Dawa, Ahle Sunnet-wal-Jamaat (formerly Sipah-e-Sahaba), two factions of the JUI and a host of small groups working under the rubric of the Defa-e-Pakistan Council. Some Afghan refugees were found to be active in Peshawar and Islamabad. The madrassah students were also visible in several places. All these groups are sympathizers and supporters of the Taliban. The Sunni Tehrik and its affiliates were also active in the protest but their activists were not seen engaged in violence. Some Shia groups participated in the protest on that day and earlier but their activists were not visible in violence.

Most violent people were young, between the ages of fifteen to thirty years, influenced by narrow, sectarian and hard line religious discourse. This must also include youth with no regular jobs, no clear hope for their personal future and those looking for some fun and adventure. The experience suggests that some criminal elements also join such agitation to pursue their own agendas.

The mix of the above people constitutes the most serious threat to peace and stability and these people are likely to increase as the Pakistan state is unable and unwilling to address this challenge as a multi-dimensional social, economic and political problem. Most of these people are socialized into a hard line, sectarian and violence prone purely religious worldview. They have no appreciation of Pakistan as a state, their rights and duties as a citizen and how to interact non-violently with those do not share their worldview. A perceptible hostility towards the outside world, especially the West, is noticeable with a strong notion of persecution of Muslims by non-Muslims.

Their socio-political and religious identification ladder runs from an individual to Islamic denominational group or Islamic movement to Islamic Ummah. The state and government do not directly figure in it. The relevance of the state and government depends on the extent to which these facilitate the interests and agendas of their Islamic group or movement. Whatever happens around them, including world politics, is a function of religion. Therefore, the state and government are secondary to their religious-sectarian agendas and they can use violence against those who are seen as a threat to their vision of Islam. At times, violence is used to assert their group identity and power. These groups also compete with each other for building support and getting new recruits and they rely on madrassah and mosque networks.

If the Pakistani state authorities want to save Pakistan from descending into chaos, they will have to identify the hardline and violent groups, their parent religious organizations, their networks and how do they recruit people. If these are separated from the relatively peaceful groups, their role can be contained. It is going to be a difficult task. It relates to changing the mindset of these groups and people. The state functionaries should not ignore these troubles by attributing all this to ?some miscreants?. It is important to recognize that Pakistani state is losing the capacity to function as an over-riding and coherent authority, surrendering a lot of space to violent religious groups.

Schwarzenegger reveals how Shriver confronted him over secret son

In his new autobiography, Arnold Schwarzenegger lays out exactly how he was blindsided by ex-wife Maria Shriver when she waited until he left office to set up a couples' counseling session to confront him about the child he secretly had with the couple's housekeeper.

In the book called "Total Recall," due out next week, Schwarzenegger says that it was on Jan. 4, 2011, when he and Shriver entered a therapist's office for a meeting initiated by her the day after his term as governor of California came to an end.

"The minute we sat down, the therapist turned to me and said, 'Maria wanted to come here today and to ask about a child -- whether you fathered a child with your housekeeper Mildred,'" the actor and former pol wrote in the book. "I told the therapist, 'It's true.'"

Schwarzenegger says he then started groveling, telling his wife that he had "screwed up" and that she was the "perfect wife," and that he was still "turned on" by her. It didn't work, and Shriver separated from him, and later filed for divorce.

In the book, Schwarzenegger says he had sex with housekeeper Mildred Baena in 1996 in the family guest house while Shriver and their kids were away on vacation and he was in town filming "Batman and Robin."

Schwarzenegger, 65, says that for years he tried to convince himself that Baena's husband was the father of their son, Joseph. But when the boy grew up and the resemblance to Schwarzenegger was so strong, he writes, "I realized there was little doubt that he was my son."

This hiding of the tryst and his secret speculation about his biological son all happened while Schwarzenegger watched as Shriver defended him from allegations of infidelity.

"I am my own woman," Shiver said in a 2003 appearance on "Oprah." "I have not been, quote, "bred," to look the other way."

Schwarzenegger says he kept the affair and the fact that he was Joseph's father a secret partly because he was embarrassed, and also because he didn't want to face up to his wife's family, the Kennedys.

"Instead of doing the right thing, I'd just put the truth in a mental compartment and locked it up where I didn't deal with it every day," he writes.

In the book, Schwarzenegger also notes a parting shot he says Shriver, 56, took after their marriage ended. During the funeral for her father, Sargent Shriver, his now ex-wife described the respect he had for her mom.

"The way he admired her and respected her, when I think about it today, it actually takes my breath away," she said.

Schwarzenegger, who was in the audience, says that comment might have been "partly directed at me."

Schwarzenegger says he still doesn't know why he cheated, but that it was probably a mixture of stupidity and arrogance, he writes.

The star also writes that he still hopes to reunite with Shriver.

"You can call this denial," he writes. "But it's the way my mind works."

Sniping from within GOP adds to Romney's struggles

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Mitt Romney struggled to steady his presidential campaign on Friday, buffeted by an outbreak of sniping by frustrated Republicans, fresh evidence of a slide in battleground state polls and President Barack Obama's accusation that he was writing off "half the country" in pursuit of the White House.

Republican running mate Paul Ryan drew boos at an AARP convention in New Orleans when he said Romney would repeal Obama's health care law, which closed a gap in coverage for seniors' prescription drugs. The Wisconsin congressman accused the administration of weakening Medicare and flinching from tough measures needed to stabilize Social Security's finances, adding that the president has "put his own job security over your retirement security."

Obama rebutted Ryan's charges point by point in a video appearance to the same audience. He said the Republican prescription for Medicare would mean "billions in new profits for insurance companies" and replacing guaranteed benefits with a voucher that would bring higher out of pocket costs for seniors.

Romney campaigned in Nevada as aides released a 2011 federal income tax return showing he and his wife, Ann, paid $1.94 million in federal taxes last year on income of $13.7 million. Their effective tax rate was 14.1 per cent, lower than many families pay because most of the couple's earnings come from investments.

The campaign also released a letter from Romney's doctor saying the 65-year-old former Massachusetts governor is healthy and physically up to the demands of the presidency.

Republicans tried to yank the campaign focus back to the economy.

"While President Obama and Democrats will try to distract voters, Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan are focused on fixing the economy, getting Americans back to work and ensuring a better future for our children and grandchildren," Sen. John McCain, the Republicans' 2008 presidential candidate, said in a statement.

But there seemed no letup in the bad political news for Romney, hit by a barrage of it since he was seen on videotape saying that his job as a candidate is not to worry about the 47 percent of Americans whom he said pay no income taxes and see themselves as victims.

Obama, for sure, was eager to keep the controversy alive. Campaigning in Woodbridge, Va., he defended himself against Romney's jabs in response to his own statement that change is impossible from the inside in Washington. "It can't happen if you write off half the nation before you even took office," he said.

According to Wall Street Journal/NBC News/Marist Poll surveys, the president has opened leads among likely voters of eight percentage points in Iowa, with 6 electoral votes, and margins of five percentage points each in Colorado (9 electoral votes) and Wisconsin (10.)

Earlier surveys published this week pointed to leads for Obama in both Virginia, with 13 electoral votes, and Ohio, with 18.

National polls have been far closer, including an AP-GfK survey this week that had it a statistical tie among likely voters. They have also suggested progress for Obama in terms of his handling of the economy, the No. 1 issue in the race.

Despite Romney's difficulties, recent soundings on employment have not been encouraging for the president's re-election. Newly released figures show joblessness ticked up in five swing states in August, fell in two and was unchanged in two others.

Romney's allies also point to a series of presidential debates beginning Oct. 3 as a chance to shake up the race.

But for now, Romney's troubles have sent shudders down ballot, where Republicans are in tough races that will settle the outcome for the struggle for control of the Senate this fall. Tommy Thompson, dropping in the polls in Wisconsin, said "the presidential thing is bound to have an impact on every election."

That produced a quick retort from John Sununu, a top Romney surrogate. "My good friend Tommy Thompson sounds like Barack Obama, blaming it on somebody else," he said on CNN.

But Thompson wasn't alone. Rep. Rick Berg, running for the Senate in a closer-than-expected race in North Dakota, became the latest in a string of Republican candidates to say they disagreed with Romney's 47 percent remarks.

Apart from his self-inflicted political wounds, Romney has been under pressure from fellow Republicans to draw clearer distinctions with Obama on the economy, and say more clearly what he would do to bring down the nation's 8.1 percent unemployment rate.

Asked to point to new policy proposals that Romney has made since early August, aides referred to one speech on energy independence and a set of remarks on veterans.

But he has generally been unwilling to flesh out his plans for balancing the budget or enacting tax reform, refusing, for example, to name a tax break he would eliminate except for a small one that subsidizes producers of wind power.

He criticized Obama's handling of anti-American demonstrations around U.S. embassies in the Middle East earlier in the month, but declined to say what approach he would have taken instead. And while he has repeatedly tagged Obama for not being more forceful in trying to arrange the downfall of Syrian President Bashar Assad, aides have refused for nearly a month to say whether the Republican challenger supports arming rebels fighting the regime.

Ryan provided no new policy details in his appearance before the AARP, although he renewed Romney's support for a gradual increase in the Social Security retirement age and slowing the growth of benefits for those at higher incomes. Republicans have yet to provide details.

He told seniors that Republicans "respect you enough to level with you," and said Obama's health care legislation had cut $716 billion out of Medicare over a decade and set up a board of unelected bureaucrats with authority to make future reductions so severe they could eventually jeopardize seniors' access to medical care.

"You know President Obama's slogan, right? Forward." he said, then added, mockingly, "Forward into a future where seniors are denied the care they earned because a bureaucrat decided it wasn't worth the money."

Obama answered via video hookup and a television commercial that began airing in Florida, Colorado and Iowa. It argued that under the Republican plan, seniors' health costs could go up by $6,400 a year.

Obama has said he would consider raising payroll taxes on upper-income wage earners to shore up the trust fund that pays for Social Security benefits. Workers currently pay a 4.2 percent tax on income up to $110,100 annually, although the rate is scheduled to revert to a previous 6.2 percent at the first of the year.

TrackBack - Milwaukee Specialty Food and Coffee

I just had a delightful time drinking a cappuccino and eating a light dinner at a Brady Street coffeehouse--that is, delightful until I had to use the restroom. Someone was camped out in the men's room for ten or fifteen minutes.

As I see it, almost all coffeehouses have the following comorbidities:

-One-person restrooms (c'mon, have at least a stall and a urinal like most smallish restaurant men's rooms)

-A two or three-hour closing process during which the staff talk loudly to each other while emptying garbage cans, etc.

-The mutually exclusive goals of easy parking and a good opportunity to attract pedestrian traffic

I'm still somewhat bearish on the long-term prospects of coffeehouses surviving in their current form, though there certainly are a few rock-solid fundamentals:

-The need for apartment-dwellers to get out and circulate

-People's desire to work or play around on their computers in a public, yet somewhat controlled setting

-People who enjoy the regular ritual of getting their favorite drink (I'd imagine this is a largely female group--I've seen a woman in Whitefish Bay who must have bought an iced latte every day for 17 years or more...I used to serve her at Barnes & Noble)
